Six Important Motions in Indian Parliament


1) Adjournment Motion

    At the end of question hour, motion is moved by the member to draw attention of executive towards the matter of urgent public importance.

2) Privilege Motion

    The motion is moved by the member if he feels that a minister has committed a breach of privilege of the house or any one or more of its members by withholding the facts of the case or by giving distorted version of facts.

3) Censure Motion

     The motion seeks to censure the government for its lapse. If the motion is passed in Popular house, Cabinet needs to resign.


4) No Confidence Motion

     The motion is moved by a member to express lack of confidence in the government for any reason. The motion, if allowed, may be debated upon. At the end of debate, government seeks for the vote of confidence and if it fails to get the required majority of votes, it has to resign.


5) Calling Attention Motion

     A member, with prior permission of the speaker, may call the attention of the minister to a matter of urgent public importance. The minister may give a brief statement or ask for the time to make a statement.

6) Cut Motion

     A motion seeks for reduction in the demand presented by the government. Such motions are admitted at the speaker's discretion. It is a device through which members can draw attention of the government to specific grievance or problem.
   
      a) Disapproval Policy Cut
          It means to express disapproval of policy underlying.

      b) Economy Cut
          It seeks to reduce the amount of demand by specific amount.

      c) Token Cut
          It is a device to ventilate specific grievance within the sphere of government's responsibility.
